SCIENCE MAGAZINE (KERR, 2012) REPORTED THE FOLLOWING ABOUT THE NASA MARS SCIENCE LAB (MSL) MISSION: NOT ONLY WILL NASA HAVE TO SLOW THE MOST MASSIVE LOAD EVER DELIVERED TO ANOTHER PLANET'S SURFACE FROM HYPERVELOCITY BULLET SPEEDS TO A DEAD STOP, ALL IN THE USUAL "7 MINUTES OF TERROR." BUT NASA IS ALSO ATTEMPTING TO DELIVER CURIOSITY TO THE SURFACE OF MARS MORE PRECISELY THAN ANY MISSION BEFORE, WITHIN A 20-KILOMETER-LONG ELLIPSE SOME 240 MILLION KILOMETERS FROM EARTH. BOTH FEATS ARE ESSENTIAL TO NASA'S LONG-TERM GOALS AT MARS: RETURNING SAMPLES OF MARTIAN ROCK AND SENDING HUMANS TO THE RED PLANET. AS A RESULT OF THE THIN MARS ATMOSPHERE, THIS CHALLENGE IS EXACERBATED AS THE PAYLOAD MASS IS INCREASED. THIS NASA INNOVATIVE ADVANCED CONCEPT (NIAC) PROJECT INTENDS TO SOLVE ONE OF THE TOP CHALLENGES FOR LANDING LARGE PAYLOADS AND HUMANS ON MARS BY USING ADVANCED ATMOSPHERIC IN-SITU RESOURCE UTILIZATION (ISRU). ISRU ON THE MARS SURFACE HAS BEEN PROPOSED BY A NUMBER OF INVESTIGATORS AS A MEANS TO PRODUCE PROPELLANT FOR MARS ASCENT. SIMILARLY, RECENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THE BENEFITS OF SUPERSONIC RETRO-PROPULSION AS A MEANS OF LANDING LARGE SCALE ROBOTIC AND HUMAN EXPLORATION PAYLOADS. IN THIS INVESTIGATION, THE USE OF IN-SITU PROPELLANT PRODUCTION WILL BE EXPLORED AS A MEANS TO FULFILL THE PROPELLANT NEEDS OF SUPERSONIC RETRO-PROPULSION AS PART OF AN ADVANCED ENTRY, DESCENT AND LANDING SYSTEM (EDL). WITH A LARGER TEAM, LED BY THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, GEORGIA TECH'S (GT) RESEARCH EFFORTS WILL FOCUS UPON EDL ANALYSIS AND MODELING, ORBITAL MECHANICS AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING ANALYSES. THIS RESEARCH TASK IS ENVISIONED AS A SEVEN MONTH EFFORT STARTING ON JULY 11, 2016. A NINE-MONTH ACTIVITY IS PLANNED. THE NOMINAL START DATE IS JULY 11, 2016 AND THE NOMINAL PROJECT END DATE IS FEBRUARY 16, 2017. A FINAL PROJECT REPORT AND PRESENTATION WILL BE DELIVERED NEAR THE CONCLUSION OF THIS INVESTIGATION. THE TOTAL REQUESTED BUDGET FOR THIS TASK IS $25,000. THIS BUDGET WILL SUPPORT THE PART-TIME PARTICIPATION OF ONE GT GRADUATE STUDENT AND ONE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF DR.
