THIS SYSTEM-ON-CHIP WILL BE THE BUILDING BLOCK FOR DISTRIBUTED SENSING INTERROGATION SYSTEMS THAT ARE THE SIZE OF A DECK OF PLAYING CARDS. THIS LIGHTWEIGHT, RUGGED, AND MINIATURE SYSTEM WILL ENABLE OFDR-BASED SHM SENSING APPLICATIONS IN SPACE, WHERE SIZE AND WEIGHT CONSTRAINTS ARE PARAMOUNT. PHASE I SUCCESSFULLY PROVED THE FEASIBILITY OF THE HETEROGENEOUS SILICON TUNING LASER CHIP AND DISTRIBUTED FIBER OPTIC SENSING USING A SILICON OFDR CHIP IN THE LABORATORY. DURING PHASE II, LUNA WILL OPTIMIZE THE SILICON TUNING LASER AND OFDR DESIGNS IN PREPARATION FOR FABRICATION OF A FULL OFDR SYSTEM-ON-CHIP, DEMONSTRATING THE MINIATURIZATION AND WEIGHT SAVINGS NECESSARY FOR DEEP SPACE SHM APPLICATIONS. OVERCOMING TECHNICAL HURDLES IN LASER TUNING, POLARIZATION CONTROL, AND DELAY LINE LENGTH ARE CRITICAL TO SUCCESSFUL COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE INNOVATION FOR SHM SENSING, AND WILL PROVIDE ADVANCEMENT IN THE STATE-OF-THE-ART OF SILICON PHOTONICS AND STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING.$750K

HOWEVER, THE INSPECTION AND REPAIR METHODS FOR THESE MATERIALS ARE CONSIDERABLY MORE COMPLICATED. FOR AEROSPACE PLATFORM REPAIRS, A COMPOSITE LAMINATE PATCH MUST BE MANUALLY FABRICATED ONSITE AND THEN BONDED TO THE DAMAGED STRUCTURE. PRIOR TO THE BONDING OR COCURING, A VACUUM DEBULK PROCESS IS PERFORMED ON THE LAYUP, REQUIRING A SEPARATE PIECE OF SUPPORT EQUIPMENT. THE IDEAL METHOD WOULD ALLOW FOR A RAPID STRUCTURAL REPAIR TO BE PERFORMED IN LOCATIONS WITH MINIMAL ACCESS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR EXTENSIVE TOOLING, SURFACE PREP, CURE TIMES AND COMPLICATED TECHNIQUES. IN PHASE I, ENGINEERS AT LUNA DEMONSTRATED A COMPREHENSIVE SYSTEM THAT INCLUDED FACILE SURFACE PREPARATION, SINGLE BAG OUT OF AUTOCLAVE PROCESSING AND LUNAS UNIQUE FIBER OPTIC MEASUREMENT CAPABILITY FOR MONITORING REPAIR STATE. THIS PHASE II PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON OPTIMIZING THESE METHODS FOR LAUNCH VEHICLE COMPOSITE DAMAGE THAT CAN BE PERFORMED DURING GROUND PROCESSING OF THE LAUNCH VEHICLE WITHOUT THE NEED FOR FULL REPLACEMENT. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE TECHNOLOGY WILL MEET NASA LAUNCH VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS AND DEMONSTRATE POTENTIAL FOR IN SITU REPAIRS TO SPACECRAFT ON LONG MISSIONS.$750K

THE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE EMBEDDED SENSOR SYSTEM WILL ENABLE IMPROVED ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES THAT WILL ACCELERATE PROPULSION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENTS. LUNA PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A MULTI-FUNCTION, DROP IN, SENSOR CAPABLE OF MEASURING DISTRIBUTED TEMPERATURE, HEAT FLUX, STRAIN, AND PRESSURE IN METAL PIPING USING EMBEDDED HIGH-DEFINITION FIBER OPTIC SENSING (HD-FOS). FOR PHASE I, LUNA WILL DEVELOP A DEMONSTRATOR SYSTEM AND STRUCTURE WITH AN EMBEDDED HD-FOS FOR ACQUIRING MULTIPLE PHYSICAL PARAMETERS. THE DISTRIBUTED MULTI-PARAMETER SENSOR WILL SIMULTANEOUSLY MEASURE MULTIPLE PHYSICAL EFFECTS ON ROCKET ENGINE PIPING AND VESSELS. THE HD-FOS HAS A SPATIAL RESOLUTION OF 0.65 MM, SO THOUSANDS OF DATA POINTS CAN BE COLLECTED ALONG AN OPTICAL FIBER THAT CAN BE USED TO QUANTIFY SMALL FEATURES ON COMPLEX TEST STRUCTURES DEPENDING ON THE ROUTING OF THE FIBER. THE INSTRUMENTATION IS HIGHLY FLEXIBLE FOR A VARIETY OF EXTREME CONDITIONS (E.G. CRYOGENIC) IN REMOTE OR INACCESSIBLE MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS. THIS APPROACH WILL MINIMIZE THE WIRING ASSOCIATED WITH MULTIPLE INDEPENDENT SENSORS SUCH AS THERMOCOUPLES AND PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS, AS WELL AS INCREASE SAFETY BENEFITS INHERENT IN UTILIZING INTRINSICALLY SAFE SENSORS IN THE PRESENCE OF FUEL SYSTEMS.$125K
