THE CONTRACTOR WILL UPDATE THIS DATA RECORD AND EXTEND IT TO THE PRESENT, USING MULTIPLE DATA SOURCES. WE WILL FIRST REVIEW OUR CURRENT COMPOSITE IRRADIANCE DATA SET TO IDENTIFY PLACES WHERE DATA GAPS CAN BE FILLED BY INTERPOLATION (USING TECHNIQUES SUCH AS SINGULAR VALUE DECOMPOSITION), AND REPLACING OUTLIER DATA POINTS, USING STATISTICAL APPROACHES SUCH AS AUTOREGRESSIVE ANALYSIS COMBINED WITH OUR UNDERSTANDING OF EACH INSTRUMENT S BEHAVIOR. IN ORDER TO EXTEND OUR COMPOSITE IRRADIANCE DATA SET BEYOND 2005, WE NOTE THAT DAILY SPECTRAL SOLAR IRRADIANCE MEASUREMENTS FROM THE NOAA-16 AND NOAA-17 SBUV/2 INSTRUMENTS BEGAN IN MARCH 2001 AND OCTOBER 2002 RESPECTIVELY. THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE CONSISTENT IN INSTRUMENT DESIGN AND DATA FORMAT WITH PREVIOUS MEASUREMENTS FROM THE NOAA-9 AND NOAA-11 SBUV/2 INSTRUMENTS, BUT DO NOT CURRENTLY INCLUDE A CORRECTION FOR LONG-TERM DEGRADATION. THE UARS SUSIM INSTRUMENT PERFORMED A VARIETY OF REFERENCE SOLAR MEASUREMENTS, WITH THE PRIMARY MISSION REFERENCE CHANNEL OBSERVATIONS OCCURRING APPROXIMATELY TWICE PER YEAR THROUGH THE END OF THE UARS MISSION IN AUGUST 2005. WE WILL USE THE SUSIM REFERENCE MEASUREMENTS TO CREATE TIME-DEPENDENT AND WAVELENGTH-DEPENDENT CALIBRATION CORRECTIONS FOR THESE SBUV/2 DATA SETS, FOLLOWING THE APPROACH PREVIOUSLY USED TO CREATE THE NOAA-9 AND NOAA-11 IRRADIANCE DATA SETS. BASED ON THAT EXPERIENCE, WE ANTICIPATE THAT THESE CORRECTIONS CAN BE EXTENDED THROUGH AT LEAST 2007 WITH REASONABLE ACCURACY. WE WILL THEN EXTEND THE NOAA-16 AND NOAA-17 DATA SETS THROUGH 2009 BY UTILIZING THE PROLONGED PERIOD OF SOLAR MINIMUM ACTIVITY BETWEEN CYCLE 23 AND 24 TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL REFERENCE POINTS, FOLLOWING THE APPROACH USED TO ANALYZE AURA OMI IRRADIANCE DATA. FINALLY, CALIBRATED SOLAR SPECTRAL IRRADIANCE DATA FROM THE AURA OMI INSTRUMENT COVERING THE WAVELENGTH RANGE 270-500 NM ARE NOW AVAILABLE FROM 2007 TO THE PRESENT [MARCHENKO AND DELAND, 2014]. WE WILL COMPLEMENT AND SUBSTANTIALLY EXTEND, BOTH IN THE TIME AND WAVELENGTH DOMAINS, OUR REVISED COMPOSITE IRRADIANCE DATA SET WITH THESE HIGH-QUALITY MEASUREMENTS. AS WITH THE ORIGINAL COMPOSITE IRRADIANCE DATA SET, THERE ARE CERTAIN SPECTRAL REGIONS AND TIME PERIODS THAT ARE NOT FULLY REPRESENTED BY DIRECT MEASUREMENTS FOR THE CREATION OF THIS EXTENDED COMPOSITE PRODUCT (E.G. WAVELENGTHS LESS THAN 270 NM DURING THE OMI MISSION). WE WILL FILL THESE INTERVALS USING CALCULATED IRRADIANCE VARIATIONS BASED ON SCALED MG II INDEX MEASUREMENTS. THE SCALING FACTORS RELATING MG II INDEX VARIATIONS TO SPECTRAL IRRADIANCE CHANGES SHOW EXCELLENT CONSISTENCY BETWEEN SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM VARIATIONS, AND BETWEEN DIFFERENT SOLAR CYCLES. IN THIS PROPOSAL WE EXTEND NEW TECHNIQUES RECENTLY DEVELOPED BY THE AUTHORS TO ADDRESS QUESTIONS RELATED TO BLOWING SNOW TRENDS, VARIABILITY, TRANSPORT, SUBLIMATION, AND MASS BALANCE OF THE ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET. PRECIPITATION AND WIND DRIVEN TRANSPORT AND SUBLIMATION OF SNOW ARE THE IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF SMB OVER MOST OF ANTARCTICA. NEAR THE COASTS AND OVER PARTS OF THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA, MELTING MAY ALSO BE A SIGNIFICANT TERM, BUT OVER MOST OF THE ANTARCTIC INTERIOR, PRECIPITATION AND WIND-DRIVEN SNOW PROCESSES DOMINATE. WE PROPOSE TO UTILIZE CALIOP AND MODIS DATA TO CREATE A CLIMATOLOGY OF BLOWING SNOW OCCURRENCE TO STUDY ITS EFFECT ON THE MASS BALANCE OF THE ANTARCTIC AND GREENLAND ICE SHEETS AND ITS POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. AS CLIMATE AND OCEAN TEMPERATURE WARMS, IT IS EXPECTED THAT ICE WILL MELT NEAR THE COASTS ACCELERATING GLACIER ADVANCE AND FURTHER MELTING. HOWEVER, A WARMER ATMOSPHERE CAN HOLD MORE MOISTURE LEADING TO INCREASED PRECIPITATION THEREBY ADDING MASS TO THE ICE SHEETS. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHAT EFFECT WILL DOMINATE IN A CHANGING CLIMATE. DUE TO THE SCARCITY OF OBSERVATIONS, PRECIPITATION OVER ANTARCTICA CAN ONLY BE ESTIMATED FROM MODELS AND IS KNOWN TO LACK ACCURACY. BLOWING SNOW DEPENDS ON TWO FACTORS: WIND SPEED AND THE AVAILABILITY OF SNOW. THE LATTER IS OBVIOUSLY RELATED TO PRECIPITATION. THE SOUTHERN ANNULAR MODE (SAM) INDEX IS KNOWN TO BE RELATED TO PRECIPITATION OVER ANTARCTICA. UTILIZING THE 6 TO 9 YEAR RECORD OF BLOWING SNOW FREQUENCY THAT THIS WORK WILL CREATE, WE INTEND TO LOOK FOR CONNECTIONS BETWEEN BLOWING SNOW FREQUENCY AND THE SAM INDEX AND ALSO ENSO. DETERMINING THE TREND OF BLOWING SNOW FREQUENCY MAY GIVE US INSIGHT INTO CHANGES IN PRECIPITATION AND WIND SPEED, BOTH OF WHICH MAY BE AFFECTED BY A WARMING CLIMATE.
