SEVILLETA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Project Title: CANINE DIET PRODUCT Background: The Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility (SWMF), built on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (SNWF) in 1996 is on of three U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) approved pre-release facilities within the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan captive management program. Wolves at the SWMF are managed in a manner that minimizes human contact in order to maximize desired behaviors, such as avoidance, pair bonding, breeding, pup rearing, and healthy pack structure development. Wolves at the SWMF are evaluated and selected for release to the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area (MWEPA) based on their genetic makeup, reproductive performance, behavior, physical suitability, and their overall response to the adaptation process. As a pre-release facility, the SWMF has proven successful in breeding wolves for release purposes, and it continues to be an integral part of the Mexican Wolf recovery efforts. Imperative to the success of the Mexican Gray Wolf reintroduction project is the captive propagation and management of wolves that are genetically, physically, and behaviorally suitable of reestablishment in the wild. The SWMF is a member of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP) and must operate under guidelines provided by the SSP for captive management of the Mexican Wolf. The SSP is a bi-national captive breeding program between the United States and Mexico, whose mission is to re-establish the Mexican Wolf in the wild through captive breeding, public education, and research. This captive population is the sole source of Mexican wolves available to reestablish the species in the wild and is imperative to the success of the Mexican wolf reintroduction project. SSP guidelines are contained in the Mexican Wolf Husbandry Manual. The Mexican Wolf SSP Husbandry Manual is based on the best current scientific knowledge for the maintenance and propagation of the subspecies in captivity. Scope of Work: Provide approved Food and Drug Administration (FDA) certified and Accredited Zoo and Aquarium (AZA) approved Canine Diet Product for the Mexican Gray Wolf Survival Plan program for the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility within the Sevilleta NWR, NM. The canine diet product is also used as a management action for wolves in the wild.  2.0 Project Description The Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility is a member of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP) and must operate under guidelines provided by the SSP for captive management of the Mexican wolf. The Mexican Wolf SSP Husbandry Manual is based on the best current scientific knowledge for the maintenance and propagation of the subspecies in captivity and follows AZA guidelines. The Contractor shall supply canine diet product per the ingredient’s specification listed below to the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility: Horse meat Protein – 20 – 25% Fat - 5% 3.0 Deliverables Canine Diet Product as described in #2 above delivered in a refrigerated trailer Delivery hours are from 09:00 am to 02:00 pm, Monday through Friday 4.0 Acceptance Criteria A government representative will inspect and accept shipment at the time of each delivery. The canine diet product shall be FDA certified and AZA approved.
