Description

CATTLEGUARD MATERIALS ORDER COCONINO NATIONAL FOREST June 2026 SPECIFICATIONS FOR CATTLEGUARD GRILLES, WINGS, WING POSTS AND BASE UNITS: A. This is a solicitation for materials and delivery of cattle guard grilles, clean-outs, vaults and wings. B. Item 1 shall consist of: 1. 2 steel cattle guard grilles, including 2 C10x15.3 end locking channel and a hinged clean-out, H- 20, 8’x7.5’, green 2. 2 steel wing ends, green 3. 2 treated timber wing posts, 6”x6”x96” 4. 2 concrete base units (8’x7.5’) C. Item 2 shall consist of: 1. 2 steel cattle guard grilles, including 2 C10x15.3 end locking channels and a hinged clean-out, H-20, 10’x7.5’, green 2. 2 steel wing ends, green 3. 2 treated timber wing posts, 6”x6”x96” 4. 2 concrete base unites, 10’x7.5’ D. The following will NOT be provided as part of this solicitation: 1. Object Markers 2. Installation E. Specifications Referenced: The USDA Forest Service has adopted FP-24 (619.08 Cattle Guards) for construction of National Forest System Roads. The USDOT, Federal Highway Administration “Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects, U.S. Customary Units”, publication FP-24, 2026 edition is available online at: : https://flh.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/specs/ F. Size for item 1 (B): Cattle guards shall have a length along the line of traffic of 7.5 feet. Each grille shall have a specified width of 8 feet. There shall be 12-13 rails to form the grille, with the rails spaced equally to span the 8’ length of the grille. The rails will be spaced approximately 7-1/2” on- center. G. Size for item 2 (C): Cattle Guards shall have a length along the line of traffic of 7.5 feet. Each grille shall have a specified width of 10 feet. There shall be 16 rails to form the grille, with the rails spaced equally to span the 10’ length of the grille. The rails will be spaced approximately 7-1/2” on-center. H. For both items 1 and 2 the design live load shall be HS-20 load rating. I. Construct the grille units of welded steel members to form a rigid deck. Cattleguards shall be constructed of materials as shown on the drawings and described in these specifications. J. Structural steel rails shall be formed from high-strength, low alloy structural steel conforming to -- 1 of 4 -- subsection 717.01(b). All other structural steel shall conform to subsection 717.01(a). Bolts and Nuts shall conform to subsection 717.01(d). New material shall be used in the fabrication of cattle guards. K. Grille rail members shall be square tube steel as shown on drawing 619-08, Page 1. L. Grilles are not required to have hold down clamps at the corners. M. Welding: Steel grilles shall be all-welded construction. Welds shall be secure and complete along both edges of cross pieces and at joints in the frame, and shall conform to subsection 555.18. N. Paint: Cattleguard grille shall be painted after fabrication. Painting shall conform to Section 563. Column 5 of Table 563-1 shall apply or powder coated according to AAMA 2604-05 specifications. The topcoat color for cattleguard grille shall be Federal Standard Color 24325. N. Cattle guard grilles, wings, wing posts and bases shall be made in the United States. O. Causes for Rejection: concrete may be rejected for, but not limited to, the following reasons: a. Misalignment of steel end plates and/or mismatch of steel end plate holes with cattleguard bolt holes. P. The CO shall be notified 72 hours prior to delivery. Q.
