General Information 1.0 Scope of Work The Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit (WARU) requires 50,000 Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags that are implanted in catfish musculature to provide an individual identification for fish co-cultured in tanks or ponds. The tag is approximately 12 mm in length and approximately 2 mm in diameter and contains a hexadecimal code that is read by Biomark PIT tag readers already existing at WARU. These tags are off-the-shelf items. 2.0 Background Catfish used for US aquaculture have very similar physical characteristics, so tagging to identify individual fish is critical for accurate measurement of growth rate, carcass yield, and other production traits in individuals. PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tags are identification tags that are implanted in catfish muscle to provide a unique identity to each fish. These fish belong to the catfish genetic improvement program at the USDA, ARS, Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit in Stoneville, MS. Tens of thousands of fish are hatched in May and June each year, raised in tanks in our hatchery (Bldg 46), then tags are implanted at approximately 6 months of age prior to moving the fish to outdoor ponds for another year of growth. The tags remain with the fish as broodstock. Contractor Requirements 3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks Each tag must be at or near the size of 12 mm in length and 2.2 mm in diameter. Tag must contain a hexadecimal code readable by instruments produced by Biomark (Boise, ID) that are in place at the Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit in Stoneville, MS. 4.0 Government Furnished Government will furnish the electronic readers needed to detect the unique identification code on each tag. Contractors will submit their own company invoice and reference the contract number on the invoice. The invoice shall not be submitted until the supplies have been delivered. Payment will be made by Invoice Processing Platform (IPP). All invoices must be submitted electronically through the Invoice Processing Platform (IPP) via https://www.ipp.gov.
