Section 1: Introduction
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) division at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is planning
for an upgrade of its storage ring (792-m in circumference) consisting of approximately 800 electromagnets placed
in 30 identical cells. As a test of the new upgrade concept, 2 electromagnetic dipoles in 2 adjacent cells will be
replaced by hybrid dipoles and quadrupoles built with permanent magnet (PM) blocks. The procurement of these
high-performance PM blocks is covered by this Statement of Work (SOW). The precise technical and quality
requirements are detailed herein.
Section 2: Scope of Work
The Contractor shall provide the facility, equipment, construction of any needed tools and fixtures, personnel, and
labor needed to manufacture, inspect, test, and deliver the high-performance permanent magnet blocks listed
within this document.
Any nonconforming item(s) shall be clearly identified, isolated, and placed in a secured location by the Contractor.
The Contractor shall document the nonconformance and send it to the BNL Technical Representative for review
and disposition.
The Contractor shall email the required documentation listed within this document to the BNL Technical
Representative immediately upon completion of the deliverable items as detailed in (Section 9).
Section 3: BNL Furnished Documents
BNL will provide the following technical drawings as engineering specifications for manufacturing:
• Drawing LT-SR-MG-PMQH-3001: Hybrid Dipole Permanent Magnet Blocks
• Drawing LT-SR-MG-PMQH-4001: Hybrid Focusing & Defocusing Permanent Magnet Blocks
Section 4: Permanent Magnet Material Requirements
The magnetic material of the PM blocks must meet the following magnetic parameters.
Table-1: Permanent Magnet Material Parameters (Nominal Reference Temperature: 20 ⁰C)
Description Value
Material Type Samarium Cobalt (Sm2Co17)
Remanent Flux Density (Br) 1.14 T Minimum, Range ± 0.02 T from
average Br
Coercive Field (Hcj) 1740 kA/m, Minimum
Maximum Energy Product ((BH)max) 240 kJ/m3, Minimum
Section 5: Magnetization Direction Arrow
To ensure precise orientation during hybrid magnet assembly, a magnetization direction arrow shall be
permanently laser etched onto each block. The placement, sizing, and orientation of the laser-etched arrow shall
strictly conform to the details as per the furnished drawings (Section 3).

Section 6: Tolerances
All PM blocks must comply with the geometric and magnetization angle tolerances as specified in the supplied
drawings (Section 3). ). If the required dimensions of the permanent magnet (PM) blocks can only be achieved by
segmenting and gluing smaller blocks together, the contractor shall provide detailed drawings of the assembled
geometry with the quotation.
Section 7: Progress Reporting
The Contractor shall communicate technical and manufacturing progress to the designated BNL Technical
Representative every three weeks. Reports shall be delivered via email or conference call, as mutually agreed
upon.
Section 8: Quality Assurance Requirements
The Contractor shall maintain a robust, documented quality management system complying with all terms of this
SOW and the master BNL contract.
The Contractor shall provide a comprehensive end-item documentation package serving as objective evidence of
complete compliance with the BNL contract requirements. The documentation package shall be fully traceable to
the physical items supplied and must include all records specified in the Deliverables Section 9.
Section 9: Deliverables
The Contractor shall deliver the following items to BNL:
• Hybrid Dipole PM Blocks: One hundred (100) pieces.
• Hybrid Focusing & Defocusing PM Blocks: Sixty-eight (68) pieces.
• Documentation: Electronic copies of standard dimensional inspection reports (with individual measured
values for every single block traceable by serial identifier) and magnetic material test certifications matching
Table-1 requirements. The documentation is to be received at BNL 1 week prior to shipping authorization.
• Shipping Authorization: The contractor will be given authorization electronically by BNL to ship the PM
blocks following the review of the documentation.
• Packaging and Shipping: The PM blocks will be packaged in separate boxes to prevent chipping and
demagnetization. The shipping container shall meet the requirements of transportation of strong (> 1 T) permanent
magnets.
Section 10: Delivery Schedule
All permanent magnet blocks identified in the Deliverables Section 9 of this document shall be delivered to BNL no
later than (18) eighteen weeks after receipt of a BNL contract.
Delay Notification: Any schedule variances or potential delays shall be promptly and formally communicated in
writing to the BNL Technical Representative.
Section 11: Proposal
The supplier shall submit a proposal to BNL confirming their ability to meet all the requirements defined in this
document and on the BNL furnished drawings. Each requirement that the supplier cannot meet shall be identified
in the proposal with clarification as to what they can provide.
