MINIMUM SPECIFICATION FOR Programmable Stripping Machine
1. Scope
This specification defines the minimum requirements for a new programmable stripping machine
for the Electronics Fabrication Division. This specification includes details for the purchase of a
new programmable stripping machine also referred to in this specification as stripping machine
or stripper with the accessories defined in this specification.
2. Application
The programmable stripping machine along with its accessories will be used to strip wire for
cable assemblies.
3. Requirements
3.1 Process/Performance Requirements
The stripping machine shall employ a rotary head with a 4-blade design. The stripping machine
shall meet the following requirements as a minimum:
3.1.1 Wire gauge: The stripping machine shall be capable of stripping wire ranging from 18 to
4/0 AWG (American Wire Gauge). The stripping machine shall also be capable of twisting
strands.
3.1.2 Wire size/diameter: The stripper shall be capable of stripping wire up to .67 inch outside
diameter as a minimum.
3.1.3 Insulation Types: The stripping machine shall be capable of processing wire with a variety
of insulation types to include but not limited to Teflon, Kapton, pliable silicon, PUR, PVC,
rubber, and Tefzel.
3.1.4 Stripping Length: The stripping machine shall be capable of stripping lengths up to 3.94
inches as a minimum.
3.1.5 Pull-off Length: The stripping machine shall be capable of a pull-off length up to 4.05
inches as a minimum.
3.1.6 Stripping Applications: The stripping machine shall be capable of the following strip
applications as a minimum:
• Strip with partial or full pull-off
• Multi-stage stripping
• Multi-step stripping
• Jacket stripping of multi-conductor cable
• Stripping of very thin insulation

• Jacket stripping of multi-conductor cables and power cord with stripping of inner
conductors
• Multi-step stripping of jacket and inner conductors
• Multi-step stripping of shielded cables with or without processing the shield
• Twist strands
3.1.7 Control: The stripping machine shall have a built in control for strip operations. The control
shall employ a high-resolution 7" touchscreen monitor to provide user interface. The control
shall be capable of processing wire in a specific sequence as programmed.
3.1.8 Work Area: The stripping machine shall have an LED lighted work area for good operator
visibility.
3.1.9 Accessories: The vendor shall provide the following accessories as a minimum:
• Calibration Jig
• Wrench Set
• Wrist Rest
3.1.10 Machine Size: The stripping machine shall not require a foot print greater than 8’w by
12’h by 20”d
3.2 Utilities
The stripping machine shall operate on 120 VAC, single phase, 60 cycle power. The necessary
power required and the amperes shall be stated in the proposal. The stripping machine shall rely
on regular shop air if it has a compressed air requirement. Shop air is approximately 90-100 PSI.
4. Safety
The stripping machine shall be UL, CSA, and CE listed and meet all requirements set forth in
OSHA General Industry Standards 29 CFR 1910, dated 1 July 1996. In addition, it shall meet or
exceed the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements of NFPA 79-1994,
"Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery." All energy control sources shall have the
capability of being locked out and tagged out. The contractor's manuals shall detail the
lockout/tagout procedures which are required to bring the stripping machine to a zero mechanical
state for maintenance or service procedures. If the machine has a power switch and plugs into a
receptacle such that the switch may be turned off and the machine can be unplugged from the
power source, that is sufficient to comply with zero mechanical state requirement. Start-up
procedures to return from the zero mechanical state to full operational capability shall also be
provided.
5. Documentation
The contractor shall provide two sets of commercial manuals with the stripping machine. This
documentation shall be provided at the same time as the machine delivery.

6. Delivery
Delivery of the stripping machine shall be within 90 days of contract award.
7. Warranty
The equipment furnished under this specification shall be warranted for parts and labor for a
period of 5 years from the date of delivery. This is to include a standard 1 year warranty and an
additional 4-year extended warranty. IN THE CASE OF ANY COMPONENTS OR
SUBSYSTEMS WHICH COME WITH A WARRANTY FROM THE MANUFACTURE
THAT IS LONGER THAN 5 YEARS, THAT WARRANTY WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE
GOVERNMENT WITH THE OTHER REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION. THE EXISTENCE
OF WARRANTIES FOR COMPONENTS OR SUBSYSTEMS WHICH HAVE A DURATION
OF LONGER THAN 5 YEARS IN NO WAY NEGATES OR DIMINISHES THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR FOR PROVIDING WARRANTY OF THOSE
COMPONENTS OR SUBSYSTEMS FOR A PERIOD OF 5 YEARS AFTER THE DATE OF
START-UP/SET-UP. There shall be single contractor accountability to prevent confusion of
responsibility if a problem or breakdown occurs.
