Description

Requirements / Specification Document TITLE: QNet Amplifier Pump Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group: Communications Technology Laboratory Quantum Sensing and Communications Quantum Networking and Transduction (676.03) General Statement of Need: The product to be procured is a low noise, tunable, high- power, single frequency microwave synthesizer with capability to generate tones of up to 16 GHz. This equipment will be essential for the readout of microwave-optical transducer devices being developed by collaborators at the University of Colorado and Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (CU-JILA). As part of the quantum networking project within the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL), these CU-JILA transducer devices will be installed at NIST, with the microwave synthesizer acting as a electrical coherent pump required to achieve good read out SNR. Due to fabrication constraints in making these circuits and readout amplifiers there is inherent uncertainty in the exact resonant frequency and quality factor of any individual device requiring pump tone tunability. Previously, the CU-JILA collaborators identified the need for ultra-low phase noise in such a system to meet the stringent performance requirements. The microwave synthesizer to be acquired by NIST must have similar performance such that added noise of the pumping tone does not adversely impact the added noise of the phase sensitive amplifier device. There are two critical technical requirements, namely an output power above +25 dBm with an adjustable carrier frequency from roughly DC up to >16 GHz. The high output power is critical for ensuring the generated signal is able to reach the device through the high isolation attenuation required by the dilution refrigerator which houses the transducer. Fine tuning of the output power is required to study power-dependent effects. A wide tuning range up to at least 16 GHz is required, because parametric amplifiers cannot easily be manufactured to create an exact pump operating frequency. The associated phase and amplitude noise of this generator are crucial because they additionally couple to the amplifier as noise decreasing readout performance. A phase noise floor approaching -145 dBc/Hz at 1-1.5 MHz offset frequency from the carrier is desirable. Another technical requirement is the ability to control and program this equipment into a larger experiment. Additional specifications are noted below.
