What this opportunity is
The Department of Commerce is seeking a Sources Sought notice for an Optical Frequency Comb, which will support high-stability optical measurements and the development of optical timescales. This opportunity is suitable for small businesses within the NAICS code 334516, focusing on precision optical equipment. Interested vendors should note that this is a Sources Sought notice, indicating the government is gathering information rather than soliciting bids at this time, which may require tracking for future solicitation announcements.

TITLE: Optical Frequency Comb
Requesting Lab/Division/Group: Physical Measurements Lab/Time and Frequency
Division/Ion Storage Group
General Statement of Need
The Time and Frequency division, as part of the Chronos initiative, requires an optical frequency
comb to transfer stability between various laser wavelengths and support work on high-stability
optical cavities, optical frequency ratio measurements and to develop future optical timescales.
Items and/or Ancillary Services
Item 1: Optical Frequency Comb
Quantity: One (1)
Specifications:
1. Optical frequency comb system for measuring frequency ratios between optical clocks and
transferring high optical stability (<10^-17 relative stability) between optical clock wavelengths
2. Optical frequency comb covering the wavelengths 1070 nm, 1156 nm and 1542 nm extendible to
other wavelengths in the range 500 nm to 2100 nm including 729 nm, 1348 nm, 1397 nm, 1068 nm
3. Optical output channels: 6 comb output channels.
4. Optical input channels: Up to 8 channels in the wavelength range 600 nm – 2000 nm for
beatnote generation with CW lasers within certain spectral ranges
5. RF output channels: Up to 8 RF output channels corresponding to the input channels above,
capable of producing beatnotes with CW lasers with up to 50 dB SNR in a 100 kHz resolution bandwidth
6. Frequency stability: < 5x10^-18 @ 1 s relative noise achievable for transfer of stability from any
one of the wavelengths listed above to the others.
7. Accuracy: The optical frequency comb must be capable of achieving frequency ratio
measurements among the wavelengths listed above with offsets below 10^-19 at averaging times
beyond 10000 s.
8. Integrated phase noise < 65 mrad across a bandwidth up to 2 MHz
9. High bandwidth control (> 1 MHz) of repetition rate and carrier-envelope
10. Rack mountable comb source (3U height)
11. Monitoring and control over ethernet
