BACKGROUND
This purchase is to acquire piping, fittings, valves, and pipe connections for the thermal systems which
cool the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer stacks being tested as part of the Multimegawatt
(MMW) Electrolysis project. The process fluids will be 50/50 propylene glycol/water. This cooling
system is required for successful execution of the MMW electrolysis project.
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this procurement is to purchase the equipment needed to connect National Laboratory of
the Rockies (NLR) large dry coolers to the PEM electrolyzer balance of plant. The cooling system is critical
for temperature control of the experiment requiring a reliable system that minimizes down time for repair
and maintenance.
SPECIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
• Materials of construction shall be compatible with the process fluid of 50/50 propylene
glycol/water
• Maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) shall be > 150 psi (10.3 bar) for all components
• Maximum allowable working temperature (MAWT) shall be > 200°F (93°C) for all components
• Minimum allowable working temperature shall be < -22°F (-30°C) for all components
• All components shall be outdoor rated
• All components, unless specifically noted, shall have end connections meeting the Victaulic
Original Groove System (OGS) Specifications and meet the requirements (e.g., pipe size and
squareness) of the Victaulic Field Installation Handbook

The maximum allowable tolerance from square-cut pipe ends is 1/16 inch/1.6
mm for 4 – 24-inch/DN100 – DN600 sizes. This is measured from the true
square line (from page 4 of the Field Installation Handbook)
• All components, unless specifically noted, shall be of the Iron Pipe Size (IPS) category
• All components shall have Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) seals/seats in alignment
with the table below
• All components, unless specifically noted, shall be Victaulic brand

• Pressure-containing portions of the equipment (see table below) shall be designed to the
applicable sections of ASME pressure codes.
