Description

HeLD Vacuum Pumping System Specification ATF - HeLD HeLD-SPEC-018 1 ATF VF-19 Vacuum Pumping Train Requirements Specification April 21, 2026 Rev 3 SCOPE of SUPPLY The scope of this procurement covers the delivery a vacuum pumping system to be installed and operated at the NASA Armstrong Test Facility (ATF), including spare vacuum pumps. The pumping system will be installed on a 6 foot diameter, approximately 10 foot tall vacuum chamber, evacuating the system to less than 5 x 10-6 Torr. The turbo pump will be directly mounted to a 10 inch inner diameter flange. The roughing pump will back up the turbopump and also have a bypass loop around the turbopump to allow for direct pumping on the vacuum chamber. Cooling is to be via water cooling with entrance temperatures at room temperature. The detailed requirements and vendor proposal response guidelines for the vacuum pumping system with spares requested by the government, are defined in this procurement specification and are herein outlined below numerically by items 1 thru 27 for those interested and qualified vendor/suppliers to respond to. 1) Equipment: Vacuum Pumping System 2) Order Qty: Item Qty: Applicable Req. Turbo pump (including controller) 2 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19 Roughing pump 2 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19 Ballast purge valves and adaptor 1 3, 4, 12, 13, 19 Power cables 1 ea 17, 19 Isolation valves and connections for bypassing roughing pump 2 3, 4, 9, 19 3) Process Description: The turbo pump will be direct mounted to the vacuum chamber on a 10” ID port (ASA 10, but adaptable) with an existing gate valve. The roughing pump will be configured such that it can either back the turbo pump or perform roughing capabilities directly on the vacuum chamber through a separate KF-40 flange. Figure 1 shows this in schematic form. -- 1 of 4 -- HeLD Vacuum Pumping System Specification ATF - HeLD HeLD-SPEC-018 2 Figure 1: NASA vacuum pumping configuration. 4) Remote Operation: The vacuum pumping system, including valves, shall be able to be remotely operated. 5) Lubrication: The turbopump and roughing pump shall be dry operated pumps. 6) Turbo Pump speed: The turbopump shall have a nitrogen pumping speed of at least 2400 liters / s. 7) Roughing Pump speed: The roughing pump shall be sized such that it can back the turbopump at maximum speed and ultimate pressure. 8) Cooling: The vacuum pump system cooling shall be by 30% propylene / 70% water. 9) Roughing pump Bypass size: The roughing pump bypass shall have an inlet using a KF- 40 flange. 10) Turbopump Inlet size: The turbopump inlet shall be no larger the maximum bore for a flange that is reasonably adaptable to NASA’s existing ASA-10 flange (adaption not included). 11) Ultimate pressure: The ultimate pressure of the turbopump shall be less than 1 x 10-7 Torr. 12) Purge: The turbo-pump shall be configured to accept a dry nitrogen purge with inlet pressure to valve at 6.9 bara. 13) Purge control valve: The turbopump purge shall have remote control isolation. 14) Power Supply: 208 V / 60 Hz / 1 or 3 phase 15) Current 40 Amps maximum combined -- 2 of 4 -- HeLD Vacuum Pumping System Specification ATF - HeLD HeLD-SPEC-018 3 16) Valve actuation voltage: 24 V DC 17) Valve actuation failure: If applicable, valves should fail close 18) Communications Protocol: Preferred PLC communication protocol is Profi-bus, alternatives acceptable with NASA concurrence. 19) Electrical Certification: UL or engineering equivalent 20) Controller Cable Length The controller cable length shall be at least 20 meters 21) Water cooling flow rate: The combined water-cooling flow rate shall be equal to or less than 10 liters per minute of room temperature water. 22) Installation Location: Indoors 23) Warranty and Servicing: The vendor shall provide a minimum one-year warranty including parts and labor. 24) Delivery Destination: The vendor/supplier shall include in their firm-fixed price cost proposal to the Government, FOB shipping costs of all components to the following location: NASA Armstrong Test Facility Attn: Luke Sorrelle 3597 Scheid Rd Sandusky, OH 44870 25) Documentation Deliverables: The vendor/supplier shall provide at a minimum three (3) copies of the following documentation at time of equipment delivery: • Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manuals (as applicable) • Electrical Wiring Diagram • Mechanical Drawings w/dimensions 26) Vendor/Supplier Proposal: The vendor/supplier shall include in their firm-fixed price response to this solicitation at a minimum the following information: • Technical description of proposed vacuum pumping system • Specifications of proposed vacuum pumps to be furnished including how it meets all requirements. • Delivery schedule and lead times • Shipping/transportation costs • Listing of Vendor supplied Deliverables -- 3 of 4 -- HeLD Vacuum Pumping System Specification ATF - HeLD HeLD-SPEC-018 4 • Any exceptions to the above government requirements as listed above in this procurement document (see items 1 – 24) 26) Government Technical Point of Contact: NASA Glenn Research Center 21000 Brookpark Rd.
