GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.0 SUMMARY OF WORK
The objectives of this project are to repair by replacement the 3 rd story roof
of U.S. Army Garrison Devens RFTA Building 668.
The existing 3rd story roof of Building 668 consists of existing asphalt
shingle roofing with unknown underlayment supported by a low-pitch plywood
deck sheeting. The built-up roofing is to be removed and replaced with a
asphalt shingle roof. Existing lightning protection is to be removed and
reinstalled upon completion of the new roofing system.
The general description below is given to indicate the approximate scope of
the Work necessary to complete the project. It does not limit the work
required under the drawings and specifications.
1.1 REFERENCES
A. Where references (e.g. ASTM, ACI, etc.) are noted for compliance
throughout this Statement of Work, Contractor shall use the most
current and up to date copy at time of actual construction.
B. Contractors shall be responsible for providing their own copies
of references.

1.2 DEFINITIONS
A. Drawings – That part of the Contract Documents which graphically
shows the scope, extent, and character of the Work to be performed
by the Contractor. Shop Drawings and other Contractor submittals
are not Drawings as so defined.
B. Existing Conditions - Including but not limited to, all existing
buildings and interior utilities (HVAC, electricity, plumbing,
etc.), structures, fences, roads, sidewalks, pavement, curbs, above
and underground utilities and equipment, existing improvements,
vegetation (trees, shrubs, grass, etc.), and underground facilities.
C. Furnish – When used in connection with services, materials, or
equipment, shall mean to supply and deliver said services,
materials, or equipment to the Site (or some other specified
location) ready for use or installation and in usable or operable
condition.
D. Install Perform or Provide – When used in conjunction with services,
materials, or equipment, shall mean to put into use or place in
final position said services, materials, or equipment complete and
ready for intended use.
E. Shop Drawings – All drawings, diagrams, illustrations, schedules,
and other data or information which are specifically prepared or
assembled by or for the Contractor and submitted by Contractor to
illustrate some portion of the Work.
F. Site – Including but not limited to land, buildings, structures and
or areas indicated in the Contract Documents as being furnished by
the Government upon which the Work is to be performed, including
rights-of-way and easements for access thereto, and such other lands
furnished by the Government which are designated for use by the
Contractor.
G. Underground Facilities – All underground pipelines, conduits,
cables, wires, manholes, vaults, tanks, tunnels, or other such
facilities or attachments, and any encasements containing such
facilities, including those that convey electricity, gases, steam,
liquid petroleum products, telephone or other communications, cable
television, water, wastewater, storm water, other liquids or
chemicals, or traffic or other control systems.
H. Work – The entire construction, on- and off-site, or the various
separate identifiable parts thereof required to be provided under
this Contract. Work includes and is the result of performing or
providing all labor, services, submittals, and documentation
necessary to produce such construction, and furnishing, installing,
and incorporating all materials and equipment into such
construction, all as required by this Contract.
I. Unless stated otherwise in the Contract, words or phrases which have
a well-known technical or construction industry or trade meaning

shall be used in the Contract in accordance with such recognized
meaning.
1.3 WORK COVERED BY THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS
A. Item No. 0001 REPAIR ROOF, BUILDING 668
The Contractor shall furnish all plant, labor and material, equipment,
supervision, incidentals, and services required to perform and complete the
work necessary to fully remove and replace the third story existing asphalt
roof to Building 668 as specified herein and as shown on the attached
drawings.
DEMOLITION
The Contractor shall fully remove the existing roof system down to the existing
plywood deck sheeting and the removal and safe keeping of the existing lightning
protection system.
Upon removal of existing roof system, Contractor shall survey and inspect
roof area for deterioration. Contractor shall provide a written report with
photos of the conditions found.
During construction, the interior side of roof deck system shall be surveyed
for any damage as a result of attaching or installing new nailers. Contractor
shall repair all damages to the structures and appurtenances.
CONSTRUCTION
Roof System: Provide roofing system to include, asphalt shingles,
underlayment, and other materials as specified in Sections 07 31 13 Asphalt
Shingle Roof System.
