What this opportunity is

The Department of Commerce is seeking sources for the repair and refurbishment of hydrogen masers, specifically for three units, which includes inspecting and replacing various components to enhance performance and reliability. This opportunity is suitable for small businesses specializing in electronics repair and refurbishment, particularly those with expertise in precision instruments. As this is a Sources Sought notice, interested businesses should focus on demonstrating their capabilities rather than submitting formal bids at this stage.

Description

Use this document to detail specifications/requirements for an item and/or ancillary services. 🛈 TITLE: Hydrogen maser repair/refurbishment 🛈 Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML/Time and Frequency/Time realization and Distribution Group General Statement of Need 🛈 The NIST timescale is an ensemble of atomic clocks, of which hydrogen masers make up the largest component. Aging masers have old components nearing end of life and are experiencing degradation of performance. Repair or replacement of the worst behaved units is critical for futureproofing the whole system against failure. Replacing ion pumps, power supply modules, and thoroughly testing/repairing subsytems can extend maser lifetime without requiring new units. An upgrade to control panel and cavity register module can improve performance of older device to match currently available new systems. In particular, the new cavity register module fixes an infrequent source of frequency steps or glitches – improving reliability. The upgrade to the MHM-2020 level improves phase noise from <116 dBc to <130 dBc at 1 Hz, as well as decreasing the temperature and magnetic field sensitivity, further improving reliability. The new version implements a drift compensation algorithm, reducing the long term drift from <2*10^-15 per day to <3*10^-16/day during long term operation. Improving the predictability of the clocks will directly improve the behavior of the timescale as a whole.
