STATEMENT OF WORK Aeolus Wide Field Context Camera (WFCC) Lens Design Option Evaluation Prime Contract No. Page 1 of 2 RFP No. BACKGROUND NASA is developing the Aeolus instrument suite to investigate the processes driving seasonal cycles of dust and water ice on Mars by systematic observation of its atmosphere from orbit. Within this suite, the Aeolus Wide Field Context Camera (WFCC) provides aerosol abundance context for the energy balance observations made by the other Aeolus instruments. This task will evaluate design and development options for the Aeolus WFCC lens. Engineering tasks may include simulation, modeling, and analysis. Additionally, tasks may involve estimation of costs and schedule for different options, as well as identification of suitable previously flight qualified lenses options, or suitable COTS or modified COTS lens options. OBJECTIVE The objective of this task is to evaluate options for the development of a flight qualified lens for the Aeolus WFCC. The options of interest are: • Development of a “clean sheet” design. • Reuse of a flight qualified lens design, or minor modification thereof. • Use of a COTS lens with minor or significant modifications. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • A demonstrated history of successfully designing, developing, and delivering flight lenses for deep space orbiter imaging systems meeting schedule, performance, and environmental requirements. • A minimum of 10 years designing space qualified optics. • MS in optical sciences, physics, or related fields. SCOPE OF WORK The Subcontractor will be responsible for performing the following tasks: 1. Perform preliminary lens design work for a “clean sheet” design meeting field of view (FOV), sharpness, chromatic aberration, and image circle size requirements. A final optimized design is not desired, but evaluation should be sufficient to: a. Establish the likelihood of meeting provided performance requirements b. Provide rough estimates of the size and mass of the lens c. Provide rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost and schedule estimates. 2. Evaluate the option of using an existing flight qualified lens design or minor modification thereof, meeting FOV, sharpness, chromatic aberration, and image circle size requirements. Of particular interest are modifications of the VIPER mission NavCam lens design, including replacement of the bandpass filter in the current design with a clear window in a dual camera approach, or using existing lens elements in a fisheye lens design. The evaluation should be sufficient to: a. Establish the likelihood of meeting provided performance requirements. b. Provide rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost and schedule estimates. 3. Evaluate the option of using a modified COTS lens for the WFCC, meeting FOV, sharpness, chromatic aberration, and image circle size requirements. This task may involve contacting COTS vendors for lens design details to identify promising candidates. Of particular interest are vendors with radiation tolerant designs. The evaluation should be sufficient to: a. Establish the likelihood of meeting provided performance and environmental requirements. b.
