Description
Statement of Work
1. Objective/Requirements
The Human Research Program funded the study, “Flight Thigh Cuff” or better known by Ops Nom
name, “SANS Cuff.” This study will test the efficacy of using thigh cuffs as a countermeasure
against Optic Disc Edema (ODE) throughout a spaceflight mission. To determine whether a
crewmember might develop ODE in flight and thus be a suitable candidate to participate in this
efficacy study, one of the eligibility criteria will be whether an AI tool predicts that subject will
develop SANS (Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular syndrome) in-flight and whether the predicted
change in total retinal thickness is above a predetermined threshold.
Vendor shall screen no more than 15 candidate subjects for eligibility to participate using AI
prediction tools that have been trained using spaceflight ocular coherence technology (OCT)
images obtained from astronauts during previous spaceflights.
2. Characteristics, Scope, Specs
The contractor shall perform the following duties:
• OCT image datasets
o Anonymous OCT Datasets will be provided to the vendor by the NASA Johnson
Space Center Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory (CVL)
o The vendor will analyze the provided images using an AI program to predict
▪ Development of SANS: yes/no
▪ Predicted ∆TRT
o Results will be provided to the CVL.
• Complete testing in a timely manner to support SANS milestones
3. Deliverables
Screening results will be delivered to the NASA Johnson Space Center CVL on a per mission
basis (2-3 subjects per mission, not to exceed screening of 5 subjects per year).
