1.0 SCOPE
1.1. Scope. This specification prescribes the performance requirements and identifies
verification procedures for the Vibratory Compactor. The United States Marine Corps (USMC)
has a requirement to replace the compactor.
1.2. Requirement Levels. This specification lists two values for certain performance
parameters. The threshold (T) is the minimum acceptable level. The objective (O) is the desired
level at which performance of the compactor results in an operationally significant increase in
capabilities. When only one requirement is stated, it is the threshold requirement.
2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

specification or recommended for additional information or as examples. While every effort has

2.4. Order of Precedence. Unless otherwise noted herein or in the contract, in the event of a
conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein, the text of this
document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and
regulations unless a specific exemption is obtained.
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1. Configuration. The compactor shall include both a smooth drum compactor and a
padfoot compactor. The smooth drum compactor shall be for granular soils, while the padfoot
drum compactor shall be for cohesive soils. Soil types are identified and classified per the
Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) identified in ASTM D2487-17.
3.1.1. Compaction Density. The compactor shall be capable of compacting soils to a 95%
maximum dry density in accordance with the modified standards of the American Association of
State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) T 180 (Modified Proctor).
