Description

Specifications The government seeks to provide critical workforce development via self-paced online components to advance the electrochemical and solid-state sciences given the paramount importance of battery science to transportation electrification and clean energy storage, the critical need to train professionals and close the identified skills gaps in battery science cannot be exaggerated and should be of particular interest to multiple US Department of Defense platforms. These courses focus on battery design, manufacturing, diagnostics and analysis for chemistry used in and on DoW platforms. This is not government owned technology or manufacturing processes. The intent is to provide initial instruction to get a workforce capable of providing the manufacturing/fault analysis technical services at a lower labor and production cost than hiring several PhD engineers across various subject matter areas to provide this gap capability. The courses necessary are: Course Title: Electrochemical Techniques and Diagnostics for Batteries Learning Objectives: • Bridging Theory with Application: Participants will develop a foundational understanding of electrochemical analysis and modeling, focusing on key aspects like battery cycling profiles, capacity and voltage relationships, dQ/dV, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). • Recognizing Global Viewpoints: Participants will learn to critically evaluate the most suitable analyses and tools based on data and accuracy needs, enhancing their ability to discern realistic outcomes from exaggerated claims in battery technology and scientific reports. This skill is crucial for navigating the complexities of today’s information-rich environment and contributing effectively to the industry. Course Title: Components for Lithium-Ion Batteries: electrolytes, anodes cathodes. Learning Objectives: • Evaluate the historical evolution and predict future advancements in electrode and electrolyte materials, linking innovations to improvements in battery performance and energy density. • Apply materials characterization techniques to advance Li- ion technology, developing the capability to analyze and enhance battery components. -- 1 of 2 -- • Create solutions for common Li-ion battery problems, equipping learners with the ability to tackle real-world challenges in battery design and application. Course Title: Manufacturing of Batteries and Pack Design Learning Objectives: • Develop techniques to enhance the safety and efficiency of battery packs, focusing on sophisticated fireproofing measures and the implementation of effective battery management systems. • Explore both traditional and cutting-edge manufacturing processes for lithium-ion cells, evaluating how these methods influence both the performance and cost-effectiveness of batteries. • Acquire a solid grasp of the essential components and functions of lithium-ion cells, exploring their design and construction to meet various requirements. -- 2 of 2 --
