Coating System One or more coats of one or more specified coatings. CoatingSysName This is the “coating system name” used to identify/designate a particular coating system in an SOW or PAINT SCHEDULE DWG. The CoatingSysName is defined in Section 2 AUTHORIZED COATING SYSTEMS, and maps to one or more CoatingSpecName(s). The CoatingSysName describes the number of coats required to complete the system and which CoatingSpecName(s) are authorized for use. CoatingSpecName This is the “coating specification name” used to identify/designate a particular coating specification herein. Each CoatingSpecName is defined in Section 3. COATINGS SPECIFICATIONS AND PRE-APPROVED PRODUCTS. A CoatingSpecName will map a coating specification to one or more pre-approved coating brand names that meet the specification that maps to the CoatingSpecName. FRP, FRE These are Fiber Reinforced Plastic, Fiber Reinforced Epoxy, and Fiber Reinforced Polyester; “fiberglass” hulls/components/surfaces. SEA CHEST A recess in the hull used to couple cooling water suction lines to sea water via flanges and pipe weldments. MIST COAT A mist coat is 1.0-2.0 mils (wet film thickness) of paint applied to promote adhesion or compatibility between unlike materials for spray applications only. Its a low viscosity, thin film, epoxy coating generally applied to an inorganic or organic zinc primer that penetrates the porous zinc primer and allows the occluded air to escape through the paint film prior to curing. PRESERVATION PLAN STRIPE COAT A hand-brushed, rolled, or sprayed coat of paint that is specified for a coating system, that ensures the specified coating thickness encompasses all edges, as well as at least one-inch border outside each edge, and is neat in appearance. Minimize excess thickness, as well as streaks and drops of paint. The STRIPE COAT color must contrast with the primer coat (or other coat) beneath. All corners/edges, weld joints, etc. of a surface must be STRIPE COATed. For multi-coat systems with inorganic zinc as the primer coat, apply the STRIPE COAT following the mist coat application, using the same coating used for the mist coat applied to the top of the zinc primer coat. At a minimum, and in general, a STRIPE COAT must be applied after the primer coat (or the first appropriate coat), but subsequent STRIPE COATs may be applied to achieve proper, uniform coating thickness across all surfaces. TIE COAT Similar to a MIST/TACKY COAT, except the specific tie coating material is formulated by manufacturers soley for the use in a particular coating system design. Often used in underwater hull coatings between the last AC coat and the first AF coat, or to otherwise address a chemical or other incompatibility between two coats. Sometimes called a “TACK COAT”. 2.
