SPECIFICATIONS Specifications Description: The USDA ARS Biosciences Research Laboratory, Food Animal Metabolism Research Unit and the Sugarbeet Research Unit, Fargo, North Dakota have need for a bench-top single quadrupole mass spectrometer configured with a gas chromatograph with autosampler for liquid injection, pyrolyzer unit with components, and solid phase micro-extraction capabilities. Thermocouple temperature measurement is designed into the micro furnace or equivalent for temperature calibration. Unit mounts onto the GC inlet system with no external transfer lines. Settable and programmable from ambient room temperature + 10ᵒ C up to 1050ᵒ C in 1ᵒ C increments with +/- 0.1ᵒ C stability. GC Interface must be settable from 40ᵒ C to 450ᵒ C in 1ᵒ C increments with +/- 0.1ᵒ C stability. Must meet the following guaranteed performance requirements: Using flash pyrolysis of 25 µg of a polystyrene solution containing methyl stearate (5 µg/µl) at 550ᵒC, the relative standard deviation (RSD%) of the peak area ratios of the styrene trimer and methyl stearate must be ≤ 2%. The cooling time of the furnace or equivalent from 800ᵒC to 50ᵒC must be ≤ 10 minutes to maximize sample throughput. Must include a 2-year warranty. Needs for Auto Sampler A single sample tray must be capable of holding 48 samples; quantity 1, unit each Sample cups must be made from stainless steel that has been deactivated. Sample cup volume must be ≤ 80µl. Must allow automated unattended analysis of 48 samples, including single-shot analysis and double-shot analysis. Cryogenic Trapping (Cryo-Trap) ; quantity 1, unit each: A Cryo-Trap device utilizing liquid nitrogen (LN2). The Cryo-Trap must be able to reach temperatures as low as -196ᵒC so that CO2 may be effectively cryo-trapped. The Cryo-Trap must spray LN2 directly onto the analytical column in a very narrow band of < 5mm. The Cryo-Trap must utilize gaseous nitrogen flow through a thermal exchange coil (placed in LN2) with the ability to vary the flow rate from 3-7 L/min, allowing choice of desired cooling temperatures. A optional thermal exchange coil must be available for use with a 30L LN2 Dewar (user-supplied) to allow unattended operation with the Auto Sampler. Cryo-Trap must be software-controlled using the same software as the pyrolyzer. Multi-Functional Splitless sampler (see above); quantity 1, unit each: Used with the Multi-Shot Pyrolyzer, which allows for the F-Splitless injection method, backflush, solvent cut, and improves peak separation. This device must allow the user to perform splitless analysis for Flash pyrolysis (Single-shot analysis) and Double-shot analysis Software; quantity 1, unit each (see below in workstation section): Full license Must be capable of controlling all set points of the pyrolyzer and the autosampler or work seamlessly with GC-MSD software. Must be capable of controlling the multiple modes of operation, including: Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) EGA is defined as analyzing a sample using a direct connection from the S/SL GC injection port and the MS using a 2.5 meter, 0.15mm i.d. deactivated stainless steel capillary tube.
