Description

FNAL MI8 Line Halo Monitor Image Intensifier Procurement Specification Dated: July 1, 2026 -- 1 of 4 -- FNAL MI8 Line Halo Monitor Image Intensifier Procurement Specification Introduction 1 Version Control Approvals for this document will be required from: • FFDG Procurement: Spencer Keske, Procurement Specialist III • FFDG Responsible Person: Rob Ainswirth, FNAL/MI, Scientist Table 1 Revision History Revision Responsible Person Date Description of Changes 0 Rob Ainsworth 07.01.2026 Original -- 2 of 4 -- FNAL MI8 Line Halo Monitor Image Intensifier Procurement Specification Introduction 2 Table of Contents Version Control ............................................................................................................................................. 1 1 Introduction .......................................................................................................................................... 2 2 Component Description ........................................................................................................................ 2 3 Delivery Time ........................................................................................................................................ 3 1 Introduction A new diagnostic device called a halo monitor will be installed in the Fermilab Main Accelerator Complex. The halo monitor requires a fast-gated, MCP-based image intensifier capable of detecting low-level optical emissions from high-intensity proton beam halo interactions. This specification defines procurement requirements for the image intensifier tube, power supply, housing, and relay optics needed for integration into the halo monitor camera system. 2 Component Description 2.1 Image Intensifier Tube • Spectral Response Range: 160–900 nm • Photocathode: Multialkali • Minimum Effective Area: 18 mm diameter • MCP: 2-stage MCP • Phosphor Screen Compatibility: P46 or screen has light intensity and decay time equivalent to P46 2.2 Environmental conditions • Operating Temperature: -20 to +40 °C • The system will be operated in a beamline environment and will need to survive in elevated radiation levels. Demonstrated operation in accelerator environments is desired. 2.3 Optical & Performance Specifications • Luminous Gain: 3×10⁵ minimum • Resolution: 40 min lp/mm minimum • Gate Time (FWHM): 5 ns minimum 2.4 Power Supply Module • Includes over-light interlock (turns off MCP and screen). -- 3 of 4 -- FNAL MI8 Line Halo Monitor Image Intensifier Procurement Specification Delivery Time 3 • Interlock resettable via external 5 V power supply (OFF/ON). • Supports gating using an external pulser with ≥5 ns gate duration. 2.5 Mechanical Housing • Housing must match physical shape and size of intensifier. • Compatible with Relay lens (1:1) for connecting to a 1-inch C-mount camera. 3 Delivery Time All Image Intensifier components shall be delivered to the FNAL within 6 months of the date of signature of the procurement contract.
