PART 1 – GENERAL
ITEM 1 - DESCRIPTION OF WORK
1.1 Background:
The Lincoln Home National Historic Site Visitor Center, constructed in 1976, serves as the
primary public entry point for the thousands of visitors welcomed each year. Because these doors
function as the sole means of visitor access into the building, they experience exceptionally high
use, estimated at more than 500,000 door cycles annually.
The two existing pairs of commercial glass double doors, installed in 2001, have reached the end
of their service life and are exhibiting significant deterioration. Hinges and related hardware are
worn to the point that the doors require ongoing realignment and frequent service interventions.

functional installation.
The 1976 Visitor Center at LIHO is a historic structure. The Contractor shall exercise extreme
care during all demolition and construction activities to prevent damage to existing historic
fabric. The Contractor is responsible for implementing appropriate protection measures,
sequencing, and work methods to ensure that all work is completed without adverse impact
to the structure.
This section provides a general overview of the work. Refer to the project specifications for
detailed and governing requirements. Section 08 71 00 – Door Hardware includes the door
hardware schedule and shall be used for all hardware, operational, and coordination
requirements.
The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, equipment, and supervision necessary to
provide complete, operational entrance assemblies. New door systems shall be designed to
fit within existing aluminum storefront openings. Existing storefront frames shall be modified
and reinforced as required to accommodate new heavy-duty, high-cycle entrance doors.
