STATEMENT OF WORK
Objective / Scope
The NASA Astronaut Office Training Branch is responsible for providing an Outdoor Teambuilding and
Supervised Leadership Expedition Training course for astronaut candidates and assigned crew members.
The course is designed to provide leadership, teamwork, and self-care experience in a remote wilderness
setting. The remote wilderness setting is comparable to spaceflight, and it allows development
opportunities and practice for teams prior to missions.
Place of Performance
The expedition training will be held in the remote wilderness outside of Lander, Wyoming.
Period of Performance
The expedition will occur September 8th, 2026, through September 17th, 2026.
Requirements
• 10-day outdoor leadership expedition for up to 16 participants. Enough instructors need to be
provided to divide participants into smaller groups for a low student-to-instructor ratio.
• A progression of leadership classes delivered entirely in the remote wilderness. The leadership
curriculum includes focus areas for communication, group dynamics, leadership styles, and
decision-making strategies.
• The Vendor must have a detailed understanding of how to meet NASA’s objectives and
collaboratively customize the course.
• Instructors must have extensive training including:
‒ Experience on extended remote wilderness expeditions
‒ High level of risk management in an outdoor remote setting
‒ Medical training including CPR certification and Wilderness First Responder
certification
‒ Advanced navigation, camping, and backpacking skills
‒ Experience facilitating a leadership curriculum while effectively managing group
dynamics
• Tuition includes an equipment package of:
‒ Insulating top layer (puff jacket)
‒ Fleece/puffy pants
‒ Wind shirt
‒ Wind pants
‒ Small stuff sacks (3)
‒ Plastic trash bags (3)
‒ Backpack
‒ Sleeping bag
‒ Compression stuff sack
‒ Sleeping pad
‒ Sit pad
‒ Lighter
‒ Hand sanitizer
‒ Water treatment system
