Scope / Statement of Work (SOW)
Replace Roof on Garage
Springfield Armory NHS/ Garage (Building 18)
Date: April 02, 2026
Cyclic Replacement of Garage Roof
Springfield Armory NHS / Garage (Building 18)
Project Description/Summary: This project involves the removal and replacement of approximately 600 square feet of existing roofing and associated components on Garage Building #18, originally constructed in 1930, located on the grounds of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The current roofing system has experienced significant deterioration due to prolonged exposure to weather conditions, resulting in persistent leakage and structural wear.
Previous efforts to address these issues have consisted of multiple short-term, cyclical repairs; however, these temporary fixes have not provided a lasting solution. This project aims to fully replace the existing roof system to restore the building’s integrity and prevent further damage. Upon completion, a structured cyclic maintenance plan will be implemented to ensure longevity and continued performance of the new roofing system.
Objectives: The intent of this project is to safely remove approximately 600 square feet of deteriorated roofing and associated components from Garage Building #18 and eliminate ongoing water infiltration caused by prolonged weather-related damage and repeated temporary repairs. The project will install a new, durable roofing system that is appropriate for the building’s age, function, and historic setting, thereby improving its overall structural integrity and resistance to the elements. In doing so, the project seeks to replace the current cycle of short-term patchwork repairs with a long-term, sustainable solution. Additionally, a planned cyclic maintenance program will be established and implemented to preserve the new roofing system, extend its service life, and ensure the continued protection of this historic asset in accordance with preservation best practices.
Background: The existing roof has failed over time causing uplifting, cracking and pieces falling off. This is causing both a safety hazard and structural issue of the garage. This then has potential to affect equipment stored in garage space.
