Date: 1/23/2023 Contact Steve Manning (or) Samantha Yousef with questions Background The Small Multipurpose Research Facility (SMiRF) at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) tests the capabilities and performance of cryogenic fluids within a vacuum environment. The temperature sensors used for measurement within the vacuum environment require a path out of the vacuum chamber and into the test cell, ultimately connecting to the SMiRF facility control and data systems. In order to do this, a feedthrough is required to connect the wiring from the inside of the vacuum chamber to the outside. This Statement of Work details the requirements for procuring (6) vacuum-rated thermocouple feedthroughs. The SMiRF facility currently has enough thermocouple feedthroughs to support the active test article that is installed in vacuum chamber. However it is advantageous to build up a second lid while the current test is underway, and this will require additional feedthroughs. This will provide the ability to fully prepare a second test article and vacuum lid while a current test is occurring, reducing downtime between testing. No. Scope of Work Description Engineering Requirements: • Feedthrough must be compatible with the existing circular connectors currently in use at the SMiRF facility. The vacuum side of the feedthrough must mate to a MS3476L16-26P connector, and the atmosphere side must mate to a MS3476L16-26S connector. • Feedthrough must be vacuum rated and have a leak rate of 1x10 -8 cc/sec or less. • Feedthrough must be potted to a 4.5” stainless steel Conflat flange. -- 2 of 5 -- Vacuum Lid Thermocouple Feedthroughs, Version 1.0 2 Template Rev. Pins must alternate between Chromel (+) and Constantan (-) to match the thermocouple wiring that will be attached. • Mating connectors must be provided with feedthrough for both vacuum and atmosphere sides for ease of installation and future wiring connection needs. Date: 1/23/2023 Contact Steve Manning (or) Samantha Yousef with questions APPENDIX A: GROUND-BASED PRESSURE VESSEL AND SYSTEMS PURCHASES NASA policy requires that the Pressure Systems Manager (PSM) review ground-based pressure vessel and systems (PVS) design and procurement specifications for compliance with NPD 8710.5 and NASA Standard 8719.17, which require that all new PVS be designed, acquired, fabricated, inspected, tested, installed, repaired, altered, operated, and maintained in accordance with the applicable codes, standards, guides, and regulations. Further, all flexible hose purchases shall conform to Glenn Safety Manual Chapter 7, paragraph 6.3. The GRC PSM grants technical review authority to the PVS owner’s organization. However, to avoid potential cost and schedule delays resulting from PVS that are not compliant with NPD 8710.5 and NASA Standard 8719.17, PVS requesters are strongly encouraged to involve the Pressure Systems Office (PSO) as early in the project effort as possible (e.g. – invite the PSO to participate in all reviews, seek the feedback of the PSO on specifications prior to the purchase of significant PVS), instead of waiting to obtain PSO concurrence during the safety permitting and recertification process. If a PVS requester is unsure regarding the PVS’s code compliance, and/or proper application of the PVS in an existing or new system (i.e. design pressure/ Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP), minimum design metal temperature, maximum design temperature, commodity compatibility, etc.) it is best to request a PSO review prior to initiating a procurement activity.
