Description
The USDA Agricultural Research Service in Kimberly, Idaho, requires a new lateral move
sprinkler irrigation system with variable rate irrigation (VRI) controls to be installed on a 20-acre
field for research use. An option is included for a second identical VRI lateral move system to be
installed on an adjacent field.
System Requirements
1. Hose feed, electric cord lateral move irrigation system installed in Field 1 (Figure 1).
2. Field dimensions are approximately 660 ft wide and 1300 ft long. Southwest corner of the
field is located approximately lat. 42.551747°, long. -114.352698°. Contractor must verify
actual distances in the field.
3. Maximum travel distance is 1300 ft.
4. Pressurized water source is from existing 8-inch buried mainline located approximately in
the center of the west side of Field 1 (Figure 2).
5. 3 Phase 480 VAC power source is located at the irrigation pump, located approximately 480
ft south and 680 ft west of the southwest corner of Field 1 (Figure 3).
6. The system lateral to consist of 4 spans. All spans should be equal length except the first
span can be longer to provide dry travel lane for main cart. The main cart is to be located
along the west side of the field.
7. The main irrigation cart can be 2 or 4 wheeled.
8. Guidance system is to be controlled by GPS.
9. Outlet spacing on the sprinkler pipe is to be 30 to 40 inches. Sprinklers with variable rate
control will be evenly spaced at 80 to 110 inch spacing. Additional outlets will be plugged for
possible future modifications and research applications.
10. Two water supply risers are to be installed along the west side of Field 1using buried 125 psi
PVC pipe. Each riser will be approximately 325 ft from the field center (Figure 1).
11. Water supply to lateral move system from the riser is to be by 5-inch diameter soft hose.
Two hoses are to be provided, one for each water supply riser.
12. Electrical power supply to the later move system is to be SOOW electrical cord.
13. Lateral system 480 V electrical supply pedestals are to be located adjacent to each water
supply riser. Each electrical pedestal also includes a 110v single phase outlet.
14. The lateral irrigation system shall include a variable rate irrigation control system with
individual sprinkler control to control water application to irregular shaped irrigation
management zones.
15. VRI will have water-controlled solenoid values.
16. Each sprinkler control valve will be equipped with a poly hard drop hose to provide a
sprinkler height of 60 inches above the soil surface.
17. Each sprinkler shall be equipped with a Nelson Irrigation 15 psi pressure regulator and
Nelson Irrigation olive plate rotator sprinkler.
18. Maximum travel speed of the lateral irrigation system at 100% timer setting is to be between
9 to 12 feet per minute.
19. The variable rate irrigation system controller is to be capable of programming multiple
stopping points along the travel length with on/off water control.

20. The variable rate irrigation system controller will provide programming of system travel
speed at specified locations along the travel length for up to 10 speed changes to be
sequentially executed over the lateral travel length.
21. The variable rate control system will provide remote monitoring and control using a
computer or smart phone.
Optional second lateral move irrigation system
1. Identical four-span, variable rate, lateral move irrigation system as installed on Field 1.
2. Second system will be installed on Field 2, directly south of Field 1(Figure 4).
3. One water supply riser and one 480 V electrical supply pedestal are to be installed in the
center of the west side of Field 2.
4. Pressurized water source can be supplied by extending the pipeline from Field 1 or from an
existing 10-inch buried mainline in the southwest corner of Field 2 (Figure 5).
5. Water supply to the lateral move system will be one, 5-inch diameter soft hose.
6. 3 Phase 480 VAC power source to be supplied from Field 1.
7. Electrical power supply to the later move system will be SOOW electrical cord.
