Description
Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: Wearable Full-Body IMU Motion Capture System
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory
Public Safety Communications Research Division
Advanced Communications Research Group (671.02)
General Statement of Need:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires two wearable, portable
full-body Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) motion capture suits. This system must function
without fixed optical camera infrastructure to allow for flexible data collection in various
environments. The acquisition includes hardware and software to capture high-fidelity
human skeletal data for the development of a motion action dataset. To accommodate a
diverse range of test subjects, the requirement includes additional clothing components in
various sizes. This acquisition supports research for the public safety communications
community.
The Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) promotes the development and
deployment of advanced communications technologies through research, development, and
standardizations. The Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) division specifically
drives the development of critical communications technologies for first responders. This
purchase is in direct support of the mission to provide skeletal data for use in a motion
action dataset to evaluate communication technologies. This capability ensures NIST
provides the measurement science and data required to support the nation's need to
develop and use advanced materials and technologies
Item Specifications and Quantities:
Item 1: Wearable Full-Body IMU Motion Capture System
Quantity: 2 UNITS
Specifications: 1.1 Wearable, portable full-body IMU motion capture system
that does not require fixed optical camera infrastructure.
1.2 Full-body coverage with at least 17 sensors per suit.
1.3 Sampling rate of at least 60 Hz.
1.4 Supports standard subject calibration and body model
scaling.
1.5 The Contractor shall describe how the system addresses
magnetic interference and drift and must report drift
performance during continuous recording.
