THIS RADIATION TOLERANCE IS NEEDED TO SURVIVE LONG DURATION SPACE MISSIONS AND CAN BE UTILIZED INTO ONE OF ITS PAYLOAD CONTROLLER PROJECTS TO CREATE A MORE ROBUST SYSTEM. DOWN SELECTION OF CANDIDATE MATERIAL WILL RELY ON ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS OF THE SMA BEHAVIOR AND PREDICTED RADIATOR ACTUATION OBTAINED WITH AN EXISTING FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS. UNDER THE PURCHASE ORDER, TEXAS A&M WILL PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TASKS: PERFORM A MATERIALS STUDY OF COMPOSITE STRUCTURES THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR USE IN A VARIABLE GEOMETRY SPACECRAFT RADIATOR THAT USES SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS TO PASSIVELY CHANGE THEIR VIEW TO SPACE. CREATE A REPORT OF RECOMMENDING THREE POSSIBLE DESIGN OPTIONS. CONDUCT PRELIMINARY THERMAL ANALYSIS, FEA ANALYSIS AND BENCH TOP TESTING TO EVALUATE AND PREDICT PERFORMANCE OF THE POSSIBLE DESIGN CANDIDATES. PROVIDE A WRITTEN REPORT OF RESULTS WITH RECOMMENDATIONS. CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT OF THREE POSSIBLE DESIGN CANDIDATES. PERFORM FEA SIMULATIONS OF SMA FORM FACTORS, SUCH AS WIRE SIZE, WIRE ROUTING, AND OR OTHER FORMS SUCH AS STRIPS OR RIBBONS. PROVIDE PERFORMANCE PREDICTIONS OF SMA MATERIAL FORM FOR RADIATOR DESIGNS. PROVIDE PERFORMANCE PREDICTIONS FOR EACH DESIGN USING THERMAL, FEA ANALYSIS, AND BENCH TOP TESTING. PROVIDE WRITTEN REPORT EVALUATING EACH DESIGN. FABRICATE A PROTOTYPE SHAPE MORPHING RADIATOR TO MEET SPECIFIED REQUIREMENTS. PERFORM BENCH TOP PERFORMANCE TESTING OF THE RADIATOR AND ANALYSIS TO VERIFY THE RADIATOR MEETS SPECIFIED REQUIREMENTS. DELIVER PROTOTYPE RADIATOR AND REPORT OF BENCH TOP TESTING AND ANALYSIS. | $10K |
